Kent Roller Girls Triumph at The Goodwood Roller Marathon

On the 14th August, fifteen of the Kent Roller Girls skated 26 miles in the Goodwood Roller Marathon. Each year the charity race invites skaters of all abilities to join together and raise money and awareness for their chosen charities.

This year Kent Roller Girls are raising money for Rising Sun, a domestic violence and abuse charity based in Kent. The team's aim was to raise £300 and they surpassed this by raising a staggering £1,903.00 Which could climb even further since all fifteen skaters managed to complete the 26 miles. One of the KRG skaters, Diagnosis Maul'er said about the marathon, "It was a great day for all and it was fantastically organised".

Rising Sun do amazing work, providing help for all those affected by domestic violence. They provide counselling for adults and children affected by violence, help and information on housing, as well as providing general support to individuals and communities. Much of the support Rising sun gives to women focuses on them regaining their freedom and happiness as well as building up their confidence and empowering them.

Roller Derby teams across the country took part in this event. The sport encourages teamwork and helping others in the community, which is something Kent Roller Girls intend to build on in the future.

The team are still accepting donations for Rising Sun. You can help Kent Roller Girls reach £2000 by visiting their Just Giving page

Here is what the team said about their Goodwood experience:

"After the first lap I thought there is no way on this earth can I do that 11 times! Fortunately I had the best derby team in the world behind me and with a massive help from Baby slam, Gels bells n her lovely sister I managed to haul myself over the finish line a very proud derby girl." KK

"I think everyone was brilliant and we all pushed each other on, we ended as a team not individuals... great memories" BG

"I never thought a year ago that I'd be skating a marathon and an hour into it, I didn't think I'd be finishing a marathon, but with the support of all my team mates, I crossed the finish line. Amazing!" GD
